Foundation

The Leukaemia Project Foundation (LPF) is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation registered in Ghana in 2009, committed to the fight against leukaemia and other blood-related disorders. LPF was founded by two Professors of Haematology at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and a leukaemia survivor who recognised the growing number of patients, the high cost of bone marrow transplants abroad, and the lack of adequate facilities in Ghana. Our mission is to improve the care of patients suffering from blood cancers and haematological diseases by building an ultra-modern Bone Marrow Transplant Unit in Ghana. This centre will include specialised laboratories, general and transplant wards, outpatient services, a bone marrow registry, and an educational wing for training healthcare professionals.

The Postgraduate Medical Journal of Ghana reports that over 3,659 cancer deaths occurred at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in a 10-year period, with leukaemia contributing significantly to the toll due to inadequate facilities. LPF’s primary objective is to change this outlook by training doctors, equipping modern facilities, and providing affordable care locally, ensuring patients in Ghana and West Africa can access comprehensive treatment without having to travel abroad.

Recognising the scale of this mission, LPF partnered with Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH)—Ghana’s premier tertiary facility and Africa’s third-largest referral centre—to establish the Centre for Haematology and Clinical Genetics. This partnership was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding signed on 6th September 2021, a historic milestone toward making advanced blood cancer treatment a reality in Ghana. LPF is governed by an Advisory Board chaired by His Royal Majesty Chief Dr. Alhassan Andani, alongside an Executive Council and Management Board. Together with Korle Bu’s leadership, we are working tirelessly to achieve this vision, and we call on well-meaning individuals, corporate institutions, and partners to support this lifesaving project.

History

The Leukaemia Project Foundation was formed out of necessity—to ensure that patients in Ghana and West Africa do not continue to face the bleak outcomes typical of under-resourced treatment facilities. Founded in 2008 by a leukaemia survivor and two doctors from Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, the foundation was born from concern over the low survival rates of patients with leukaemia and other blood disorders. In February 2011, LPF merged with the Keith Agyepong Leukaemia Trust to combine resources and strengthen its mission.

The foundation was established to give patients with blood cancers and haematological diseases such as sickle cell disease the chance to receive comprehensive, world-class treatment locally—at a much lower cost compared to centres in the UK, USA, or South Africa. Currently, many patients in Ghana only have access to limited treatment options, often resulting in low survival rates. LPF exists to change this reality by improving access to care and raising the standard of treatment across the sub-region.
